ISBN-placing
„Publishing house of the Pädagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg“
The library is also a publishing house for writings and scripts from members of our university. We are responsible for the ISBN (International Standart Book Number) placing , but not for production or sale.
What`s the purpose of this procedure?
The ISBN is a 10 or 13 digit registration number for books and other publications mostly for the systems of the book selling industry.By using a ISBN number a publication from a certain publishing house is definitely to identify. Each book with an ISBN number is collected in the catalog of available books (can be searched also online
http://www.buchhandel.de) .Furthermore each publication is also transmitted to the German National Bibliography, where German publications are collected. By using the ISBN system each publication is present on the international book market and within libraries - what more can you wish for ?
If your script is published by the publishing house of the Pädagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg, the library is responsible for any costs of ISBN placing.
The ISBN number is easy to identify: the first digit is the country code (for example "3" stands for the German speaking countries), then there is the special number of each publishing house (our publishing house has the number 3-924080), followed by the title number choosen by each publishing house (respective the number of your publication) and at the end there is a test digit, which allows to search for incorrect numbers within each ISBN number. The different numbers within the whole ISBN are seperated from eachother using hyphens.
The history of the ISBN:
Since the mid 60ties there where thoughts about the best way of an international identification of books. 1966 W H Smith / England first introduced a standart book number "SBN". Internationaly this procedure was recognized from 1968 and 1972 the ISO 2108 (in Germany : DIN ISO 2108) was introduced.
Beginning of 2005 the 13-digit ISBN started, recognizing the more and more upcoming publishing houses from eastern Europe and the English speaking countries.
From 1. January 2007 the new 13-digit ISBN becomes compulsory.
