Libraries Profile

Since April 2009 the library exists on the Campus of the University of Education Ludwigsburg as a united library of the former "KIZ-Bibliothek PH Ludwigsburg" and the Central Library for Pedagogics (PZB) Stuttgart.

The new library of the University of Education Ludwigsburg - Pädagogische Hochschulbibliothek Ludwigsburg defines itsself as a competent service institution for all students and members of our university.Furthermore we also provide services for all interested people off the campus, teachers and members of other universities. After the unification of the two libraries KIZ-Bibliothek Ludwigsburg and the Central Library for Pedagogics Stuttgart the customers spectrum has enlarged and is now also focusing on students of all kinds of pedagogics, kindergarden teachers and social education workers.
More and more online services, such as online databases are getting into the center of our daily librarian work.

Since July, the 9th 2003 our library is a part of the Kommunikations-und Informationszentrums "KIZ" (Department for Communication and Information) at the University of Education Ludwigsburg. Our partners are the data processing department (since April 2009 the data processing department and the library are running a service desk located on the first floor of the library / building 5), the mediacenter, the department for E-Learning and Public Relations and the department for theatre and arts.The administration policy of the KIZ can be seen here

Our library is organized after a single layer library system,which means that media acquisition, the media administration and the management of budget are organized centrally.The concept is an open-access library.The core collection are various media from pedagogy, sociology and psychology.
The collection of the former Library for Pedagogics Stuttgart can be found on the libraries first floor, the so called "Collection PZB".

Our Collection

Our collection can be searched through in our online library catalog.Since 15th of March 2004 we are using the library administration system HORIZON, introduced by the American  company SirsiDynix, which is now in use in most libraries in Baden-Württemberg.
The library was founded with the opening of the predecessor of our university, the Pädagogische Institut Stuttgart in 1946.
After the takeover of the Central Library for Pedagogics Stuttgart in 2007 we have together a collection of 375.884 volumes. The Library of the University of Education Ludwigsburg is the largest library for pedagogics in the Baden-Württemberg state and the second largest within Germany (after the DFG special subject library for pedagogics of the University of Nürnberg-Erlangen).

The development of the library

2009 was an very important and busy year for our library undergoing huge developments regarding reconstructions, technical equipment, the collection itsself and staff development. 2009 was the year of inovations for the Library of the University of Education Ludwigsburg! After reconstructing the ground floor of building no. 5 the collection of the former Central Library for Pedagogics Stuttgart could finally move in.
The library now can offer over 3000 sm usable area on four floors; the latest WLAN equipment on each floor and more over the latest RFID-Technology. This new technology enables us to over our customers also a self check machine and 24/7 book return machine on the libraries ground floor.
Currently we have 5728 active customers, around 600 more than last year. There are 4000 licensed and open online databases available via the database-infosystem DBIS including our most important databases FIS Bildung, PSYNDEXplus and PsycInfo.
