Vita

Susan is Professor for Educational Leadership and Management at the Ludwigsburg University of Education. She is Head of the Department of International Educational Management and director of the INEMA degree programme.
She studied German and French literature and language at the University of Manchester and then completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Oxford. Following an international career in teaching, publishing and a break for motherhood, she completed her D.Phil. at the University of Oxford in 2010 on the work of evaluators of higher education in Germany using a case study of a large evaluation of educational science in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Susan has worked on longitudinal research on the academic identity of doctoral students and conducted further research on behalf of the Academic Administration Division of Oxford University.
After two periods of employment at the German Universities of Bamberg and Würzburg (2010-2015), she worked as a post-doctoral research fellow/assistant professor at the German University of Administrative Sciences, Speyer (2015-2020), where her research interests focussed on higher education systems, the quality of higher education and the student experience within it, addressing issues such as academic identity and the acquisition thereof. Her Habilitation focusses on the management of university infrastructure (buildings, construction, maintenance and governance) from an international perspective. During this time she became Project Coordinator of the BMBF-financed research project “KaWuM - Karrierewege und Qualifikationsanforderungen im Wissenschafts- und Hochschulmanagement”, a collaboration between the Humboldt University and the iubh Bremen (€ 740.000,00, June 2019-May 2022) (www.kawum-online.de). She was also a Senate member and deputy equal opportunities officer.
Susan is a Governing Council member of the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) and joint chairman of the working committee on higher education within the German Society for Evaluation (DeGEval). She is co-publisher of the academic journal Qualität in der Wissenschaft (QiW) and reviewer for various international journals.
